Nadi dosha in kundli matching, explained calmly
Nadi dosha is when both people's birth nakshatras belong to the same Nadi group: Adi, Madhya or Antya. Nadi then scores 0 of its 8 points in Gun Milan. Many sources list ways it is cancelled, though they do not all agree, and the traditional link to health and children is belief, not evidence.

What Nadi is
Each of the 27 nakshatras is assigned to one of three Nadis. The names are often linked to the three doshas of Ayurveda: Adi with vata, Madhya with pitta and Antya with kapha. The groups follow a repeating zigzag through the nakshatras, so each Nadi has nine.
| Nadi | Nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Adi | Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Madhya | Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Antya | Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati |
How Nadi is scored
This is calculation: if the two birth nakshatras are in different Nadis, Nadi gets the full 8 points; if they are in the same Nadi, it gets 0, and that 0 is called Nadi dosha. There is no partial score. Since Nadi is the largest koota, it is the one families ask about most.
The cancellations that are commonly listed
Many sources say Nadi dosha does not apply, or is weakened, in cases such as these:
- Both people have the same Moon sign but different nakshatras.
- Both people have the same nakshatra but in different padas (quarters).
- The lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet or are friends.
Why sources differ
These exceptions do not come from Parashara's classical text. They come from later works and regional practice, so lists vary: some astrologers accept all of them, some only one or two, and some treat a cancellation as softening the dosha rather than removing it. The Vedic Astro Lab report checks two rules, whether the two nakshatras are different and whether the two padas are different, and shows which applies.
Health and children: tradition, not evidence
Tradition links Nadi dosha with health and with children. There is no scientific evidence that two birth nakshatras affect anyone's health or fertility. If you have real health questions before marriage, a doctor is the right person to ask, not a chart.
Be careful with anyone who uses Nadi dosha to frighten you or to sell an expensive remedy.
Putting it in perspective
Nadi dosha takes 8 points off the total, so it matters to the score. It is still one koota in a traditional table, read from two Moon positions. Look at the whole score, at whether a cancellation applies under the rules your family follows, and above all at how the two of you get along.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nadi dosha a serious problem?
In the tradition it is treated as important because Nadi carries 8 points. It is not a prediction about a marriage, and its traditional link to health has no scientific evidence behind it.
Can Nadi dosha be cancelled?
Many sources say so, for example when the Moon sign is the same but the nakshatras differ, or the nakshatra is the same but the padas differ. Sources do not all agree on these rules.
Is it Nadi dosha if both have the same nakshatra?
Yes, because the same nakshatra is always in the same Nadi. Many sources then look at the padas, and treat different padas as a cancellation.
Does Nadi dosha mean we cannot have children?
No. That is a traditional belief, not something evidence supports. For any health or fertility question, please talk to a doctor.
What are the remedies for Nadi dosha?
Tradition suggests prayers, charity and rituals. Vedic Astro Lab does not sell remedies. Be wary of anyone who asks for large sums to remove a dosha.
