The 27 nakshatras explained

The nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. Each is 13 degrees 20 minutes wide and has four padas (quarters). Your birth nakshatra is the one the Moon was in when you were born, and its ruling planet starts your Vimshottari dasha.

How the nakshatras are laid out

The zodiac is 360 degrees, and 360 divided by 27 gives 13 degrees 20 minutes per nakshatra. Each nakshatra is divided into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes, which gives 108 padas in all. Because a sign is 30 degrees wide, it holds two nakshatras plus a quarter of a third (nine padas per sign).

The nine planets rule the nakshatras in a repeating order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Three nakshatras share each ruler.
