Kundli matching, also called Gun Milan or kundli milan, compares the Moon signs and nakshatras of two people across eight kootas worth 36 points in all. Traditionally, 18 points is the minimum many families look for. The score is a starting point for a conversation, not a prediction of how a marriage will go.

What the eight kootas measure

The Ashtakoota (eight-part) method gives each koota a fixed number of points, so higher kootas carry more weight. Varna (1 point): spiritual and ego compatibility. Vashya (2): mutual attraction and influence. Tara (3): health and well-being together. Yoni (4): physical and intimate compatibility.

Graha Maitri (5): mental and friendship compatibility, from the lords of the two Moon signs. Gana (6): temperament and nature. Bhakoot (7): emotional bond and family harmony. Nadi (8): health and progeny. Together they add up to 36 points, the gun milan total.

Every koota is worked out from the two Moon positions only: the Moon sign (rashi) and the nakshatra of each person. That is why both birth times are needed.

How to read a score out of 36

The traditional reading groups the total into bands. 33 points or more: excellent match. 25 to 32: good match. 18 to 24: acceptable match, at or above the traditional minimum. Under 18: below the traditional minimum.

The bands are a convention, not a measurement of love or of how two people will treat each other. Two people with 30 points can struggle, and two with 16 can be very happy. Read the kootas one by one: a low score in one area is something to talk about, not a reason for fear.

Bhakoot and Nadi dosha, and when they are cancelled

Bhakoot dosha is when the two Moon signs sit in certain positions from each other, for example 2nd and 12th, 5th and 9th, or 6th and 8th; Bhakoot then scores 0 of 7. Nadi dosha is when both people have the same Nadi; Nadi then scores 0 of 8. Because these two kootas carry the most points, they are the ones families ask about most.

Classical texts also give cancellation rules (parihara). The rules this tool checks: Bhakoot dosha is cancelled when both Moon signs have the same lord, or when the two sign lords are friends; Nadi dosha is cancelled when the two nakshatras are different, or when the two padas are different. The full report shows which rules apply and the score after cancellation.

Manglik and kundli matching

Many families check Manglik (Mangal dosha) alongside gun milan. The full report shows, for both charts, the house Mars occupies counted from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, and which houses the convention counts. Sources disagree on the houses, the reference points and the exceptions, so the report states the placements and gives no yes or no.

You can also check one chart on its own with the free Manglik check.

North and South Indian methods

This tool uses Ashtakoota, the eight-koota, 36-point method common in North India and the one most people mean by gun milan or kundli milan. Much of South India uses a different system of ten matches (Dashakoota, or Das Porutham) with its own rules, so a score from one method cannot be compared with a score from the other.

What a score cannot tell you

Shaadi ke liye kundli matching is one input among many. A matching score compares two Moon positions through a traditional table. It cannot tell you whether two people share values, communicate well, want the same life or will be kind to each other, and those matter more than any number. Please do not make a marriage decision on a score alone; talk with each other and with people you trust.

Free preview and the Rs 21 report

The free preview shows the total out of 36, the band, both Moon signs and nakshatras, and three of the eight kootas (Varna, Vashya and Tara). The full report costs Rs 21, paid once through Razorpay with no sign-in: all eight kootas with scores and plain explanations, Bhakoot and Nadi dosha with the cancellation rules, Manglik facts for both charts, strengths and areas to talk through, in English, Hindi or Hinglish, with a PDF.

The scores are calculated by the Navamsha API with the classical Ashtakoota method; the written explanations are made by an AI from those scores only and never change a number. A free preview is deleted after 24 hours and a paid report after 30 days; nothing is linked to an account.

Frequently asked questions

Is 18 gun enough for marriage?

In the traditional reading, 18 of 36 points is the minimum many families look for, so 18 is in the acceptable band. It is a convention, not a guarantee either way: look at the individual kootas, any Bhakoot or Nadi dosha and its cancellation, and above all at how the two of you get along.

Is a gun milan score of 24 good?

24 of 36 is in the acceptable band (18 to 24), just below the good band, which starts at 25. Many happy couples have scores in this range. The kootas that scored low show which areas are worth talking through.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha is when both people have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). Nadi then scores 0 of its 8 points. Classical rules cancel it when the two nakshatras are different or the two padas are different, and the full report shows whether that applies.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot dosha is when the two Moon signs are in certain positions from each other, such as 2nd and 12th, 5th and 9th, or 6th and 8th. Bhakoot then scores 0 of 7. It is traditionally cancelled when both signs have the same lord or the two lords are friends.

Does Manglik matter in kundli matching?

Many families check it. The full report shows where Mars sits from the Lagna, Moon and Venus in both charts. Sources disagree about which placements count and which exceptions apply, so the report gives the facts and no verdict on the marriage.

Is the time of birth needed for kundli matching?

Yes, for both people. The Moon can move into the next nakshatra within a few hours, and every koota depends on the Moon's sign and nakshatra, so a guessed time can change the score. If a birth time is not known, a birth certificate or hospital record usually has it.

Can I do kundli matching by name only?

Not accurately. Matching by name uses the first sound of a name to guess a nakshatra, which is often different from the real birth nakshatra. This tool uses birth date, time and place for both people.

Is kundli matching accurate?

The calculation is exact for the details you enter: the same details always give the same score. Whether the traditional table says anything about a real marriage is a matter of belief, not something research has shown. Treat it as a lens for reflection.

Is kundli matching free here?

The preview is free: the 36-point score, the band, both Moon signs and nakshatras and three kootas. The full report with all eight kootas, doshas, Manglik facts and a PDF is a one-time Rs 21, with no sign-in and no subscription.

What is the difference between kundli milan and gun milan?

They usually mean the same thing. Gun milan (guna milan) is the 36-point Ashtakoota score; kundli milan or kundli matching is the wider word for comparing two charts for marriage, which often also includes a Manglik check.
