What is Vedic astrology (Jyotish)?
Vedic astrology, called Jyotish in Sanskrit, is the traditional Indian system of astrology. It reads a birth chart drawn on the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars, and gives special weight to the Moon sign, the 27 nakshatras and the planetary periods called dashas.
Where the word Jyotish comes from
Jyotish means the science of light, and refers to the luminous bodies in the sky. It is one of the six Vedangas, the traditional limbs of study that support the Vedas. Over many centuries it developed its own methods, texts and vocabulary, and it is still widely used in India and by Indian communities abroad.
What a Vedic chart is made of
- The sidereal zodiac: twelve signs of 30 degrees each, measured against the fixed stars (see the page on Vedic vs Western astrology).
- Nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
- Twelve houses (bhavas), counted from the rising sign (lagna). Most modern Vedic software uses whole-sign houses.
- 27 nakshatras, the lunar mansions, each 13 degrees 20 minutes wide.
- The Vimshottari dasha, a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that starts from the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
How it differs from sun-sign horoscopes
Newspaper horoscopes use only your Sun sign, which is shared by about one twelfth of all people. A Vedic reading starts from your exact birth date, time and place, so the Moon sign, the rising sign and the dasha periods are personal to you. The Moon sign (rashi) is often treated as the most important sign.
What it can and cannot do
The planetary positions in a Vedic chart are astronomy, and can be calculated precisely. What those positions mean is interpretation, passed down by tradition. There is no scientific evidence that astrology predicts events, so it is best used as a lens for reflection and conversation rather than as a forecast. It is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Jyotish and Vedic astrology?
They are the same thing. Jyotish is the Sanskrit name, and Vedic astrology is the common English name.
What do I need for a Vedic reading?
Your date of birth, birthplace and, ideally, your exact birth time. The time is needed for the rising sign and the houses.
Is Vedic astrology only for Hindus?
No. It comes from the Indian tradition, but anyone can use the system. The chart is calculated from the sky, not from belief.
Is Vedic astrology scientific?
The astronomy behind the chart is. The interpretations are traditional and have not been shown by research to predict events.
