Vedic Moon sign (rashi) calculator

Your Vedic Moon sign, or rashi, is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born, measured against the fixed stars (the sidereal zodiac). It is often a different sign from your Western Moon sign.

Why the Moon sign matters in Vedic astrology

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) the Moon sign, called janma rashi, is treated as the most personal sign in the chart. The running planetary periods (dashas) are counted from the Moon's position, and slow-planet transits such as Saturn's Sade Sati are read from the Moon sign.

Many people feel the Moon sign describes their emotional style better than the Sun sign does. Astrology is a way to reflect, not a way to predict, so treat it as a lens rather than a verdict.

Why it can differ from your Western Moon sign

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The two have drifted apart by about 24 degrees (the ayanamsa), so a Vedic sign is usually the sign before the Western one.

This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and planetary positions from the NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris. See how the chart engine works for the full method.

Do I need my exact birth time?

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator checks the whole birth day. When the Moon changed sign that day, it tells you both possible signs instead of guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Moon sign in Vedic astrology?

It is the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Enter your birth date, time and place above to calculate it.

Is the Moon sign the same as my Sun sign?

No. The Sun changes sign about once a month and the Moon about every two and a quarter days, so they are usually different signs.

Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western Moon sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac and Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. They are about 24 degrees apart, so the sign often changes.

Can I find my Moon sign without a birth time?

Often yes. If the Moon stayed in one sign for your whole birth day, the sign is certain. If it changed sign that day, the calculator shows both possibilities.
