Vedic vs Western astrology: what is actually different?

The main difference is the zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars, and Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. They are about 24 degrees apart today, so most people's Vedic sign is the sign before their Western one.

Why your sign changes

The Earth's axis slowly wobbles, so the equinox drifts against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. The two zodiacs lined up around the year 285 CE by the Lahiri reckoning, and have drifted apart by about 24 degrees since. Vedic astrology keeps the signs on the stars, so the Sun is in a different sign from the Western one for most of the year.

If your Western Sun sign is Taurus, your Vedic Sun sign is usually Aries. Planets in the last six degrees or so of a tropical sign stay in the same sign in both systems.

Which one should you use?

They answer different questions and neither is a calculation error. Many people use the tradition they grew up with. If you want to compare your signs in both zodiacs, the sidereal vs tropical calculator shows them side by side.
