Vedic rising sign (lagna) calculator

Your Vedic rising sign, or lagna, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time and place. It needs your birth time, and it sets the first house of your chart.

What the lagna does in a Vedic chart

The lagna is the starting point of the chart. Vedic astrology commonly uses whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on around the zodiac. Every planet's house depends on the lagna.

Why birth time and place matter

The rising sign changes about every two hours, and the exact moment depends on the latitude of your birthplace. A difference of a few minutes can move the lagna to the next sign if you were born near a boundary.

If you do not know your birth time, no tool can give a reliable lagna. This calculator will say so rather than guess.

Vedic lagna vs Western rising sign

The Western rising sign uses the tropical zodiac, so it is usually the sign after your Vedic lagna. The difference is the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees. Neither is a mistake; they use different zodiacs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rising sign in Vedic astrology?

Enter your birth date, birth time and birthplace above. The calculator works out which sidereal sign was rising at that moment.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Without a birth time there is no reliable rising sign. Your birth certificate or hospital record usually has the time. Moon sign and nakshatra can still be calculated.

What is the difference between lagna and rising sign?

They mean the same thing. Lagna is the Sanskrit word used in Vedic astrology; rising sign or ascendant is the common English term.

How accurate is the lagna?

It is calculated from your birth time and the latitude and longitude of your birthplace. It is only as accurate as the birth time you enter.
