Manglik dosha explained: which houses count and why sources disagree

Manglik dosha, also called Mangal or Kuja dosha, is a traditional idea about the planet Mars sitting in certain houses of a chart. The houses and the reference point differ between sources, so the same chart can be Manglik by one convention and not by another. It is a pattern tradition pays attention to before marriage, not a prediction that a marriage will fail.

What the rule says

Mars (Mangal or Kuja) is the planet of energy, heat and drive. Tradition says that when Mars occupies certain houses it brings sharpness, haste or friction to partnerships. The rule is checked by counting the house Mars is in from a reference point, usually the rising sign (lagna).

The four house lists in use

There is no single agreed list. These are the four most common, and the free Manglik check on this site shows which of them your Mars falls in:

ListHouses countedShare of charts it covers
A1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 126 of 12, half of all charts
B1, 4, 7, 8, 125 of 12
C2, 4, 7, 8, 125 of 12
D4, 7, 8, 124 of 12, one chart in three

Three reference points

Most sources count from the lagna. Many also count from the Moon (the Moon sign is the starting house) and from Venus, which stands for marriage. Counting from three points gives three chances to be found Manglik, so a large share of people are Manglik by at least one convention. That is a good reason to treat the label as one pattern among many instead of an alarm.

Cancellations that are commonly listed

Many sources say the dosha is absent or weakened in cases such as these, though they do not agree on the whole list:

  • Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn).
  • Mars is conjunct or aspected by Jupiter.
  • Both partners are Manglik, so the two are said to balance each other.
  • Mars is in a particular sign and house pair that some texts list as exceptions.
  • The person is past about 28, an age at which some traditions say Mars matures and the effect fades.

Why sources disagree

The classical texts that mention Mars in these houses speak of effects on marriage in general terms and do not give a single definitive rule. The lists of houses, reference points and exceptions grew in later works and in regional practice. Different families follow different ones, so a chart that one astrologer marks Manglik can be called harmless by another. That disagreement is part of the tradition, and it is not a sign that a calculator is wrong.

What tradition does and what evidence says

Tradition links Manglik dosha with tension, delay or loss in marriage, and families may look for a Manglik match. There is no scientific evidence that Mars's house in a chart affects any marriage. Marriages succeed or struggle for reasons of character, communication, family circumstances and effort, which no chart can measure. If someone tells you a marriage is doomed, or a girl cannot marry, or that you must pay a large sum for a ritual, please take it as a red flag and ask a person you trust.

How to use the check sensibly

  • Find your Mars house from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, and note which convention your family follows.
  • Use the same convention for both people when comparing.
  • If a birth time is not known, the lagna count cannot be done, but the counts from the Moon and Venus often can.
  • Read it alongside the Gun Milan score and the rest of the chart, never in place of them.
  • Talk openly with each other. A traditional check is a conversation starter, and the real compatibility is about how two people treat each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is Manglik dosha serious?

Tradition treats it as important in matching, but sources differ on the houses, reference points and cancellations. It is not a prediction, and there is no evidence that it affects any marriage.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Tradition says a match is best when both have the same status, but many families accept the match when a cancellation applies or when other factors are strong. It is a family and personal decision.

Does Manglik dosha go away with age?

Some traditions say its effect fades after about 28. Others do not. It is a custom and not a fact about marriage.

What are the remedies for Manglik dosha?

Tradition suggests prayers to Hanuman or Kartikeya, fasting on Tuesdays and rituals. Vedic Astro Lab does not sell remedies, and we suggest caution with costly ones.
