Times are the local clock time of London, with sunrise, sunset and moonrise from the Navamsha astrology API.

On Monday, 26 October 2026 in London the day Choghadiya starts at sunrise, 6:49 AM, with Amrit. The favourable periods of the day are Amrit (6:49 AM to 8:02 AM), Shubh (9:16 AM to 10:30 AM), Labh (2:11 PM to 3:25 PM), Amrit (3:25 PM to 4:39 PM). The periods to avoid for new beginnings are Kaal (8:02 AM to 9:16 AM), Rog (10:30 AM to 11:44 AM), Udveg (11:44 AM to 12:57 PM). The night Choghadiya begins at sunset, 4:39 PM, with Char.

Choghadiya splits the day, and then the night, into eight equal periods, each with one of seven names that mark it as favourable, neutral or best avoided for starting something. It is widely used in Gujarat and western India for quick day-to-day timing.

Choghadiya in other cities

The seven Choghadiyas

Amrit (nectar) is the most favourable. Shubh (auspicious) and Labh (gain) are favourable, Labh especially for business. Char (moving) is neutral, and is usually considered fine for travel. Udveg (anxiety), Kaal (time, or death) and Rog (disease) are the three that tradition advises avoiding for new beginnings.

How the day is divided

The daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. The first daytime period takes the name of the weekday: Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday, Labh on Wednesday, Shubh on Thursday, Char on Friday and Kaal on Saturday. The names that follow go in a fixed order. The night uses a different fixed order, starting from a different name for each weekday.

Because the parts are fractions of the real day and night, each Choghadiya is about 90 minutes in a 12-hour day, but longer or shorter on other days, and the times differ from city to city.

Using Choghadiya

Many people look for an Amrit, Shubh or Labh slot when they have a choice of time for something important, and avoid starting it in Udveg, Kaal or Rog. When the time is not up to you, the tradition does not ask you to postpone. Treat it as a convenience for choosing, not as a forecast.

About the times in London

London is far north, so its summer days are very long and its winter days short, which stretches and squeezes every Panchang period; it also changes its clocks in March and October.

How these times are calculated

Sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset come from the Navamsha astrology API; where it is not available they are computed by our own engine, which agrees with it to a fraction of a second. The moment each tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana ends is computed by that engine from the positions of the Sun and Moon (NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris) in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya, Hora, Abhijit Muhurat and the other periods are fixed fractions of the day worked out from sunrise and sunset.

Almanacs differ in how they define sunrise. Here the Sun rises when the centre of its disc is on the horizon, with no allowance for refraction. Almanacs that use the Sun's upper edge and refraction show sunrise a few minutes earlier and sunset a few minutes later, and their Rahu Kaal and other periods move with it. For a ceremony, follow the Panchang your family priest or local temple uses.

Frequently asked questions

Which Choghadiya is good today in London?

On Monday, 26 October 2026 the favourable day periods in London are Amrit 6:49 AM to 8:02 AM, Shubh 9:16 AM to 10:30 AM, Labh 2:11 PM to 3:25 PM, Amrit 3:25 PM to 4:39 PM.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya divides the day and the night into eight equal periods each, and names each period Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Kaal or Rog to show whether it is favourable, neutral or best avoided for starting something.

Which Choghadiya is the best?

Amrit is considered the most favourable, followed by Shubh and Labh. Char is neutral, and good for travel. Udveg, Kaal and Rog are the ones to avoid for beginnings.

Is Choghadiya the same all over India?

The names and their order are the same, but the periods are fractions of the local day, so the clock times are different in every city and change every day.

Does Choghadiya predict anything?

No. It is a traditional way to pick a time. It does not say what will happen.

What is Panchang?

Panchang is the Hindu almanac. It lists five limbs for each day: tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana, together with sunrise, sunset and the timed periods of the day such as Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya, Hora and Abhijit Muhurat.

Why does the Panchang change from city to city?

The Moon's position is the same everywhere at a given instant, but the Panchang day starts at the local sunrise and each timed period is a fraction of the local day, so the clock times differ between cities.
