Yogas in Vedic astrology: what they are and how to read the claims
A yoga is a named combination of planets, signs or houses that tradition says gives a particular result. Examples are the Gajakesari yoga, where Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon, and the five Mahapurusha yogas, where Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is strong in its own or exalted sign in a kendra. A yoga is a rule that either holds in a chart or does not, which is checkable, but what it means is interpretation.
Ask the astrologer about your own chart.
What a yoga is, and what it is not
The word yoga here means a union or combination, and has nothing to do with the exercise. The old texts list a very large number of yogas, and later authors added more. Each has a condition (for example, a planet in a certain house from another) and a traditional result. Whether the condition holds in a chart is a matter of calculation, and a computer can check it exactly. The meaning of the result is the part that rests on tradition.
Some well-known yogas and their rules
| Yoga | Rule | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Gajakesari | Jupiter in a kendra (1, 4, 7 or 10) from the Moon | Good name, wisdom and standing |
| Budha-Aditya | The Sun and Mercury in the same sign | Clear thought, skill with words |
| Raja yoga | The lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona linked by conjunction, exchange or aspect | Position, influence, authority |
| Dhana yoga | Links among the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th houses | Earnings and savings |
| Viparita Raja yoga | The lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th | Gain after difficulty |
| Neecha Bhanga | A debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled by certain placements | Recovery from a poor start |
| Kemadruma | No planet (other than the Sun, Rahu and Ketu) in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon or with it | Loneliness or insecurity, with many cancellations |
The five Mahapurusha yogas
These five yogas arise when one of the five planets from Mars to Saturn is in its own sign or its sign of exaltation and also in a kendra from the lagna. Each is named after the type of person it describes.
| Yoga | Planet | Own or exalted signs |
|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars | Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn |
| Bhadra | Mercury | Gemini, Virgo |
| Hamsa | Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces, Cancer |
| Malavya | Venus | Taurus, Libra, Pisces |
| Shasha | Saturn | Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra |
A worked check
Suppose the Moon is in Taurus and Jupiter in Leo. Counted from Taurus, Leo is the fourth sign, which is a kendra, so the Gajakesari rule holds. Now suppose the Moon is in Taurus and Jupiter is in Gemini. Gemini is the second from Taurus, which is not a kendra, so the rule fails. A good program checks every rule exactly and states the ones that hold. The reader then has to decide how much weight to give, taking in the strength of the planets, the other combinations and the dasha.
Why a long list of yogas should make you careful
- The rules are common. Because Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, the Sun and Mercury are in the same sign for much of the year, so Budha-Aditya yoga appears in a large share of charts.
- Many yogas have long lists of cancellations. A reading that lists the yoga and skips the cancellations is half a reading.
- A site or app that finds twenty yogas in your chart is counting almost every combination that exists. That is not a sign that your chart is special.
- Results are described in general, flattering language, which fits almost anyone. See the guide on how accurate Vedic astrology is for why that feels convincing.
- A yoga needs a dasha to be read for timing. Without that, even tradition does not claim that it shows up in a particular year.
How to use yogas in a chart reading
A good way to use yogas is as vocabulary for noticing a pattern. If Jupiter stands in a kendra from your Moon, that is a fact about the chart, and tradition links it with a supportive, thoughtful quality. You can read about it, keep it in mind and see if it fits your own experience, without deciding that your life is set by it. The most useful chart readings keep to a few clear themes and say where the evidence for them ends.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Raja yoga?
It is a link between the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona, by conjunction, exchange or aspect. Tradition associates it with position and influence, and it is read with the strength of the planets involved.
Do I have Gajakesari yoga?
Check where Jupiter is relative to the Moon in your chart. If Jupiter is in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th sign counted from the Moon sign, the rule holds.
Can a yoga be cancelled?
Most have exceptions, such as a planet being combust or sitting in a difficult house, which tradition says weakens the result.
Do yogas predict events?
There is no reliable evidence that they do. They are patterns that tradition reads as tendencies, and they are best used for reflection.
